Are Sleeping Pills The Answer To Sleep Deprivation?

Sleep deprivation and sleeplessness occur when we find ourselves on edge and stressed out – this can cause a serious loss in restorative sleep, which is essential to feeling “well-rested”.  A chronic sleep-restricted state can cause fatigue, daytime sleepiness, clumsiness and weight loss or weight gain. It adversely affects the brain and cognitive function as well as having the potential to severely affect the health and well-being of the sufferer, particularly where it is allowed to continue for long periods, untreated.

While the temptation may be to reach for sleeping pills to combat the problem, this is unfortunately only a short-term solution, to a potentially far more serious long-term problem. Humans have a natural sleep drive which builds throughout the day while we are awake. This grows into the evening until we eventually feel an overwhelming 'pressure' to sleep. Sleep pressure is then relieved as we sleep, until we wake up and the process starts once again. When one is suffering from sleep deprivation, there is no relief to this pressure, which just serves to ‘build up’ as the sleepless nights continue.

Some of the more common causes of sleep deprivation include; insomnia, shift work which disrupts the natural sleep-wake cycle, sleep apnea, untreated pain such as toothache, hormonal imbalances, chronic illnesses and of course, many new mothers frequently complain of sleep deprivation. Consistent sleep-wake patterns of going to bed late, frequent nighttime arousals or waking up early can also lead to sleep deprivation and the accumulation of “sleep debt”.

Obviously, prevention is better than cure. In order to prevent your insomnia or sleeplessness from continuing, it may be important to analyze and consider a couple of things. Good sleeping habits are very important to have and maintain, but can take a while to set in place – which can be frustrating. The most important thing to bear in mind when trying to combat a lack of sleep, is that consistency is key.

Try your best each day to work toward improving your sleeping habits. Perhaps it means going to bed 5 minutes earlier each day, or putting all electronic devices off a few hours before you go to bed. Whatever you do, be sure to do it frequently and consistently, in order to really get the habit to stick.

However, whilst you working on your sleeping habits in the long-term, you will also need sleep in the short-term. It is in this instance that strong sleeping pills may be the solution you need. They will allow you to rest and recover in the short-term, getting the much-needed rest that you deserve. Whilst they aid you in sleeping day-to-day, be sure to work on your long-term habits and goals, and try to only use them intermittently, as sleeping aids are not a permanent solution, but rather a short-term cure.
